CAPIO – Correctional Sector Reforms Conference 2019
Carmelite Prisoners Interest Organization (CAPIO) held a two-day conference on Correctional Sector Reforms in Abuja. The event, held at Reiz Continental, had representatives from the Honourable Minister of Interior, State Comptroller of Correctional Service and Administrators, State Commissioners of Police, States Attorney Generals, State Prosecutors, Police, Customs and Immigration Officials, Members of the Judiciary and Human Rights and Civil Society Organizations present.
The conference provided a platform for all participants to analyze the recent trends in the correctional management and deliberate on the possibility of building bridges to the ideal women correctional institutions in Nigeria. For WAGARC as an organization, this conference consolidates the importance of our vision, which is that many more women (inmates, returned citizen) will gain power over their lives and live free from violence through changes in attitudes, ideas and beliefs about gender relations, and through increased levels of women’s active engagement and leadership in institutions, decision-making and change processes.
We were particularly proud of DCCP Lizzy for the remarkable outcomes that her management has inspired in Kirikiri correctional institute in Lagos. We wish CAPIO the best and look forward to hearing more success stories.
